1. Forming a Strategic Collective to Tackle Misinformation and Build Trust

In early 2018, BWP Communications launched a comprehensive 12-month campaign in collaboration with the Orem City Planning Division to address growing public concern surrounding the city’s projected growth. A significant number of Orem residents had voiced dissatisfaction, largely stemming from misconceptions and a lack of transparent, accessible information. In response, BWP formed the BWP Collective—an expert team comprised of professionals from BWP Communications, People+Place, D+J Designworks, and MIG—to lead a multifaceted public awareness effort. Collectively, the team brought over two decades of experience in strategic communications, metropolitan planning, community engagement, and creative design, setting the stage for a campaign grounded in education, trust-building, and civic involvement.

2. Branding a Movement: “Imagine Orem” as a Catalyst for Civic Participation

The campaign’s central goals were to educate Orem residents, generate positive public perception, invite meaningful feedback, and instill a sense of shared ownership in the city’s future. Through a thoughtful branding process, the initiative was named “Imagine Orem,” a title meant to evoke inclusivity, optimism, and collaborative planning. The name also served as a visual and emotional anchor for all communications, reinforcing the idea that residents could actively shape Orem’s path forward while preserving its cultural and historical identity.

3. Creating Community Connection Through Engaging, Family-Focused Events

To bring these goals to life, the BWP Collective designed and produced a robust suite of print and digital marketing assets, and helped coordinate two major community events, along with a booth presence at Orem’s Summerfest and Harvest Festival. These gatherings were strategically developed to be family-centric celebrations, offering residents a welcoming environment to learn about the city’s plans, connect with planners, and provide feedback. The first major event at the Orem City Library drew over 400 attendees, offering free dinner, a short presentation, district-specific visual displays, and activities for children—creating an accessible, informative, and engaging atmosphere for the community.

4. Turning Vision Into Reality with Immersive Virtual Experiences

One of the most innovative touchpoints of the campaign was a Virtual Reality (VR) experience hosted at University Mall. This interactive event allowed residents to immerse themselves in 3D visualizations of Orem’s potential future, effectively bridging the gap between abstract planning concepts and tangible vision. The event also included a complimentary meal, direct conversations with city planners, and family-friendly activities, reinforcing the campaign’s commitment to inclusion and transparency.

5. Expanding Reach Through Dynamic Digital Content and Local Collaboration

Digital platforms played a key role in expanding the campaign’s reach. BWP Collective developed the Imagine Orem landing page as the central hub for updates, resources, and survey integration via the Orem Forum. Additionally, BWP created colorful district illustrations with the help of two local artists, using them across all marketing collateral and as part of a commemorative keepsake poster for residents. To support these efforts, a targeted digital advertising plan was executed, including media buying and ad design in partnership with the Daily Herald. Social media efforts were coordinated with the City’s team to boost engagement and promote events.

BWP also played a pivotal role in facilitating stakeholder involvement through carefully crafted presentations and moderated meetings with local business owners. These sessions gave stakeholders an opportunity to engage in direct dialogue with the Orem Planning Division and deepen their understanding of future plans. Billboards, strategically placed in partnership with University Mall, expanded public awareness with dynamic, high-visibility messaging.
